The WHS Music, Art, Spanish, and Physical Education Departments would like to nominate Deakin Buchkowski for student of the month. Deakin has proven to be an exceptional student in his instrumental music classes this year. In both jazz ensemble and concert band he leads the students around him with his positive attitude and confidence. In classes he encourages everyone to play loud and many students have identified Deakin as being a leader in the band, someone they look up to, and someone who inspires them to be brave in their own playing. When faced with difficult solos and challenging parts Deakin approaches his music systematically. He breaks it down to small sections and learns it section by section. He has a growth mindset and knows that if he follows his process he will be successful. Deakin is also a student who goes above what is required of him. Recently he was spotted finishing up Beowulf (reading beyond the section required of the class) simply because he doesn’t like to leave a book unfinished. Deakin has also shown a great deal of motivation in athletic development this year; even on days he does not necessarily care for the skills being expected of him. He has also developed into a strong leader for his peers. Deakin is frequently heard reminding his peers to clean up their lifting areas, along with holding them accountable in terms of work ethic. Deakin’s ability to be upfront with his peers is notable, as most would shy away from this in fear of being responded to negatively. His constant willingness to help move equipment before and after class is greatly appreciated as it leaves transition times less chaotic. Deakin is willing to meet challenges, motivate and lead peers, and go beyond what is expected of him. For all of these reasons we feel he would be well deserving of student of the month.

WHS students enrolled in Ms. Wheaton's Advanced Engineering and Technology class recently studied optics technology. CorelDraw software was used to design the acrylic piece, and then students used the Epilog laser engraver/cutter to engrave the design and cut out the acrylic. A variety of tools was used to engineer a base that holds both the acrylic plate and lights. The projects are currently on display in the WHS Library.

Congratulations to WHS junior Ava Butt for her participation in the Senate Scholar Program! Below is a narrative of Ava's amazing experience. This week has been filled with many opportunities to learn about how the government runs and what goes into making that government run smoothly, including all of the government offices. I have enjoyed so much about the Senate Scholar Program so far. Some of my favorites have been the Capitol Dome Tour including facts and history, working as a Senate Page during the Session, meeting Senator Testin, and attending the State of the State Address. This program has helped me to become a more informed citizen and have a better understanding of leadership and decision making along with working as a team. It has been an experience that I will never forget.
