During the month of December, the 5th Grade Peer Power Leadership group, run by our 4-5 School Counselor Miss Strobl, raised money by selling candy canes to donate money to Father Carr’s Place 2B which is a homeless and food shelter in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. As a follow up to the donation, the group was able to spend time at Father Carr’s Place 2B learning about homelessness and lack of food. They served in the food pantry helping organize food donations. Many of the students believe that their thoughts of homeless and hungry people have been changed more positively.

I nominate Olivia Schmidt for Student of the Month based on the character traits of responsibility and determination. In our classroom we focus a lot on having a growth mindset. We recite a daily pledge: “Today I will have a good learning attitude, be an active learner and grow my brain, and be a mindful problem solver.” Olivia takes this pledge to heart. Olivia comes to school with a good learning attitude. She rushes into the classroom everyday with completed homework. Olivia is eager to read, is developing a good reading stamina, and gets excited about what she is reading. Olivia takes responsibility for her own learning and is a mindful problem solver. She frequently uses resources around the room to help her with her learning. During writing and word work time Olivia uses the word wall and other words around the room to figure out how to spell and write words. During math time she uses the number poster and number line. Olivia shows determination with her learning. If something is challenging, she works hard and practices until she gets it. At the beginning of the year, Olivia had trouble writing some of her lowercase letters. Olivia practiced her handwriting in her handwriting packet everyday and her handwriting has improved a lot. It is for these reasons that I am nominating Olivia for student of the month. Redgranite Elementary Mrs. Tompkins
