Today’s Youth Apprenticeship Spotlight features Wautoma High School Senior Jody Simenson!
This is Jody’s first year apprenticeship working with Yeska Farms, however, he has worked for the farm for a number of years. The Yeska’s stated they are very thankful to have Jody working for them as he is able to drive their farm trucks to a variety of job sites, including their potato farms and Christmas tree farms.
Earlier this school year, Jody has also worked at the farm’s second location, Whispering Pines Tree Farm, in Oconto. This particular tree farm provides wagon rides, tree cutting, a gift shop, and food vendors.
Jody said this experience has provided him a whole new experience on how to sell trees and help families pick out the perfect one for the holiday season.
Congratulations, Carson!
The Birthday Table continues to be a big hit at Redgranite Elementary School. This past week, the Redgranite Student Council once again spread kindness by recognizing those that celebrated birthdays in December. They also decided to celebrate the half birthdays of students who have a birthday in June. Happy birthday!
FCCLA members donated their own money to get our wonderful crossing guard a heated jacket!
Our crossing guard ALWAYS has a smile on her face no matter the weather. We are so happy to be able to do this for her!
The Wautoma Area School District is closed on Thursday, December 15th due to severe weather driving conditions. All after school activities are canceled.
Riverview Elementary Art Teacher Cindy Miller and Redgranite Elementary Art Teacher Michelle Kuehl both did schoolwide art projects using street artist ThankYouX's mural ideas as inspiration.
All of Riverview's K-3 students created a cube during art class; 4K students and staff members were also invited to participate. All of Michelle's art students and Redgranite staff created a piece for their collaboration. Everyone was allowed to add to their cubes drawings that were meaningful or designs that focused on color, line, shape, and pattern.
Last week at WHS in Ms. Morris' Food for Life class, they covered all things potatoes! Thanks to the Wisconsin Potato and Vegetable Growers Association, they were able to purchase over 50 lbs of potatoes to use in the classroom. The potatoes were purchased from Decker Family Farm. Farmer Dave even threw in some other produce to use in the classroom as a donation!
Sarah Agena, from the Wisconsin Potato and Vegetable Growers Association, chose our school to visit and we were so lucky! She did a short lesson on potatoes then helped students complete their gnocchi lab. Students prepared homemade gnocchi (potato dumplings) with a pumpkin sage sauce and homemade pesto. The basil was sourced from the aquaponics lab right here at WHS. Later in the week, students also dressed up baked potatoes to be a filling and nutritious meal!
We are grateful for the community connections we share with agricultural organizations. These food labs wouldn't be possible without them!
The Wautoma Area School District's start to the school day is delayed 2-hours due to road conditions. Buses will run 2-hours later than normal pick-up time.
DON'T FORGET: The Parkside 4th Graders will be presenting their Winter Concert "Cold Winds - Warms Hearts" tomorrow at 2 PM. The concert will be held in the lower gym of Parkside School. We hope to see you all there!
Last night during the Wautoma Area School District Board of Education’s Monthly Meeting, Mrs. Carmen O’Brien was approved to be the next Chief Financial Officer.
Mrs. O’Brien will be coming to WASD from the Manawa School District where she has been serving as the business manager since 2017. Prior to taking over the position of business manager, she worked as the Manawa curriculum director and a science teacher.
Mrs. O’Brien will begin her new position with WASD on July 1, 2023, after Cindy Reilly officially retires.
Congratulations!
Students in Ms. Lyons' Kindergarten Class have been traveling around the world to learn about holidays and traditions throughout the world. Last week they went to Mexico, Germany, Italy, and Sweden.
While "visiting" Sweden, the kindergarteners learned that Christmas and St. Lucia Day are celebrated, and made starboys hats and St. Lucia crowns. The students are excited to continue their travels to India, Israel, Australia, back home to the United States, and out to Africa and the Middle East in the coming weeks.
This morning we recognize Wautoma High School Senior Caprice Juday in the Youth Apprenticeship Spotlight!
This is Caprice’s first year working with the Hancock Agricultural Research Station in the Agricultural and Natural Resources Pathway. Caprice's duties vary as needed but she has assisted in processing samples, checking traps and digging potatoes. Amber Walker, her Supervisor/Mentor, recently stated that Caprice is very reliable and everyone enjoys Caprice’s attitude, ability to help with anything, and her commitment.
REMINDER: The Wautoma High School Band Winter Concert will be held on Monday, December 12th at the McComb/Bruchs Performing Arts Center. The concert will begin at 7:00 PM.
On Dec. 6, a group of sixth through eighth grade students from Parkside School participated in a Geography Bee, held at Adams-Friendship Middle School. Each grade-level team participated in both individual and group competitions. Congratulations to the sixth grade team for a third place finish overall and to Alexandrea Woyak for her third place finish in the individual portion of the contest.
Mrs. Shepard's 6th grade language arts classes are reading Walk Two Moons. Students are reading the parts of dialogue as a play with Mrs. Shepard or Mrs. Coussons being the narrator. Students chose the parts to read based on who was present in the chapter. They read the parts as they envisioned the character, with inflection and intonation. This helps students to learn how to write dialogue correctly as well as how to read fluently with feeling, putting themselves in the story.
On Dec. 6, Dennis Bertzyk, a long-time supporter of Wautoma students and student-athletes, enjoyed lunch provided by Charley’s with the November WHS Student of the Month nominees. The November Character Trait featured was Cooperation. Pictured with Bertzyk are: Lily Thomsen-Keller, Cami Culver (November's Student of the Month) and Emilia Iacobazzi. Not Pictured: Marissa Vasquez.
