Thank you to everyone who voted on the referendum. Voters in the Wautoma Area School District rejected a $39.8 million facilities referendum on Tuesday November 5, 2024. Despite an unsuccessful referendum, we respect the voting process and the decision of the community.
The “unofficial” results are 2742 (48.59%) votes in favor, and 2901 (51.41%) votes against. The funds would have been used to address immediate to medium-term maintenance needs, provide up-to-date secure entries, building renovations for grade level changes, a middle school addition at Wautoma High School, and the elimination of the Riverview Elementary building from the district.
“It is disappointing that we are unable to move forward with the much needed projects that were addressed in the question. With the vote being so close, a difference of 159 votes, we are encouraged that this overall referendum question was better received by the community compared to previous solutions,” said District Administrator Jewel Mucklin.
The Wautoma Area School District realizes the financial commitment that was being asked of the community. With an unsuccessful referendum, the needs will not only become more significant, but they will also grow. These unresolved challenges have a direct impact on our students, staff, and overall community, and they will need to be addressed. These challenges cannot be solved without taxpayer support.
Moving forward, the district will work closely with the school board, staff, and community stakeholders to explore alternative solutions.
The district will also seek to gather additional community feedback to gain a clearer understanding of residents' priorities and concerns as we plan the next steps and to pursue future referendums so that every building and every child has improved opportunities for success.
Thank you to everyone who participated in the voting process.
